Advocacy Update – 3.27.26 – Statehouse Spring Break

SB19 – Regards academic intervention, math improvement and intervention was heard for the fourth time in the House Education Committee on Tuesday.  Without any objections, the committee accepted sub 2935-1.  These changes include:

  • removing requirements for public schools to create MIMP (math improvement and monitoring plans)
  • math acceleration requirements will now be based on sixth grade performance
  • IEPs will now include autism education plans
  • DEW must request a testing waiver from the federal government to allow nationally-normed assessments to meet federal and state accountability requirements.

Including in these changes is a provision that would require that “any diagnostic assessment adopted by the department shall not include components to identify gifted students.” This is a troubling addition to SB19, but conversations regarding removing this language with members of the committee are positive.

The Statehouse will be on recess until after the May primaries after which they will reconvene.  The Statehouse is expected to be in session throughout the end of May and early June after which they may be on break until after the November election.
