Advocacy Update – 2.4.26 – Ohio House Education Hearing

The Ohio House Education Hearing had their first meeting of 2026 this morning.  Seven bills were heard during this hearing, but most notably, SB19 Regarding Public Schools-Academic Intervention (Brenner) was introduced for its first informal hearing pending referral. In his testimony, Senator Brenner, underscored the need for “significant and prolonged academic intervention before it is too late…” to address poor test scores throughout Ohio’s public schools.

Citing a desire to not only address students with low test scores, Senator Brenner also underscored the need to provide more opportunities to students who are “excelling.”  His testimony outlined the requirement for advanced learning opportunities for students in grades three through six and ultimately allowing for students to be automatically enrolled in Algebra 1 in the eighth grade.

During questioning, Representative Brennan stated that he was concerned whether or not “one test is a good measure of whether or not that’s a good placement.”  Rep. Brennan also raised concerns regarding students’ emotional readiness for Algebra 1 in the eighth grade.  Senator Brenner underscored the need for a “team approach” to a students’ education and argued that we shouldn’t assume students cannot handle more on their plates.
