Advocacy Update – 12.31.24 – New Year, New General Assembly

As 2024 draws to a close, so does the 135th Ohio State General Assembly.  The 135th General Assembly adjourned yesterday, December 30th.  The 136th General Assembly will convene on January 6th, 2025 with Matt Huffman (R-Lima) as their Speaker of the House.  Senator Rob McColley (R-Napoleon) will serve as the President of the Ohio Senate.  Senator Bill Reineke (R-Tiffin) will serve as the Senate President Pro Tempore.  Senator Reineke has served on the Senate Workforce and Higher Education Committee.  Senator Theresa Gavarone (R-Bowling Green) will serve as the Senate Majority Floor Leader.  Senator Gavarone also co-chaired JCARR during the last General Assembly and will play a large role in helping create Ohio’s next operating budget.  Senator George Lang (R-West Chester) will serve as Senate Majority Whip.

Before adjourning, HB8 (Parental Notification Requirements, Released Time) was passed and sent to Governor DeWine’s desk for signature.

As mentioned, the 136th General Assembly will be tasked with creating the next operating budget.  The Governor’s State of the State address is expected to take place in late January.  This address will outline the Governor’s priorities for the budget season and future legislation.  Governor DeWine has always focused on Ohio’s children and their education, so we can expect these topics to be a focal point of this address. OAGC is looking forward to a busy budget season in 2025!
