Advocacy Update 4.21.20 – Schools Shut Down for the Remainder of the School Year; ODE Gifted Fact Sheet

Schools Out – As most of you are aware, Governor DeWine informed Ohioans that Ohio schools will remain closed for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year. This should not be a surprise to anyone, as Ohio still lacks critical testing that is necessary to open up high-density buildings. The larger question might be about how school will look in August or September. It is by no means clear that things will back to normal. It is likely that some districts will decide to continue some level of online learning – especially as they way union demands on liability issues. There is no crystal ball or even expert advice on what to expect. When OAGC learns of new developments, we will continue to share them.

ODE Gifted FAQ on COVID-19 – Many in the gifted field have a list of questions about how ODE will handle issues from gifted testing to acceleration requests to WEPs to EMIS. The gifted staff at ODE have been working on these questions and are very aware of the questions from the field. The FAQ is in final stages of review and will hopefully be available soon – maybe before the end of the week. OAGC will work with ODE to get information out about the FAQ. If you have additional questions once the FAQ is released, you may submit them to [email protected]
